John Wooden was born on October 14, 1910, and past away at age 99 on June 4, 2010. Being born on a farm in Indian, John quickly learned great discipline and how to work extremely hard. His father made a rim out of yard scraps and hung it on a tree 10 feet from the ground, this is where "Johnny" developed his love for the game of basketball. He grew up and played for his local high school where the program took great pride in the performance of their basketball team. Wooden, who had shown a gift for the game from his grade school days, soon became a star player in high school. The team went to the state championship three years in a row, winning it twice. While still in high school, John met a women by the name of Nellie Riley, fell in love and they decided to marry after he finished high school. John Wooden went to Purdue University in Indiana to study civil engineering, but became an English major instead. Playing for the team at Purdue, he earned a reputation as a fearless player of dazzling speed. He made All-American three years running and won a place in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Following his remarkable college career he was offered a spot to play professional basketball for the Boston Celtics. But pursued a teaching career and taught english at a high school in Texas instead where he coached all of the athletic teams. John Wooden received a call one day to take the head coaching job at UCLA which in that time was the worst program in the west. From that day on, Wooden was history. Nicknamed the "Wizard of Westwood," as head coach at UCLA he won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period seven in a row. Within this period, his teams won a record 88 consecutive games. He was named national coach of the year six times.
