Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in South Africa. He was known mostly for becoming the first black president in South Africa and receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for world peace making. During his early 20's he joined an anti-apartheid group in South Africa where he was in for almost 20 years supporting non violence protesting against the racial policies the government was creating. In 1993 he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts with South African President Klerk to stop the country's apartheid system. Shortly after they inaugurated him for president of South Africa on May 10, 1994. From 1994 until June 1999, Mandela worked hard to not only have white people rule but also to have black South Africans rule the country. Also during his presidency he help build more jobs and better economy and better health care. After his presidency he was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer in 2001. In 2004 he officially retired and retuned to his home village. Even though he was retired he still helped people and one way he helped was fighting against AIDS. On December 5, 2013 at the age of 95, Nelson Mandela died in his home in South Africa.
I choose this picture as the abstract photo because from what I've learned from Nelson Mandela, he was always there to help people and he always spoke out for people's rights and what he believed was right. I like this picture because its a representation of how he was "the people" in South Africa. The people choose him to help them get equal rights and receive what they needed in their communities.
Video clip from 2000 after Mandela's presidency. He was talking with Oprah Winfrey on her show about how he made the prison guards call him by Mr. Mandela even though he was a prisoner. I like this video because it really shows how much he is humble and doesn't take pride in things he did, instead he thinks other people deserve the attention of being successful in what he did.
