Jack Dorsey was born and raised in St. Luis, Missouri. He was raised Catholic and went to a catholic high school and there he found his passion in technology. He began programming in high school and at the age of 15 he developed a dispatch communication software that is used in some cab companies to this day. He didn't know it then but Dispatch Communication would lead to his greatest success. He attended the Missouri University of Science and Technology. He eventually transferred to New York University where after a while, he dropped out to pursue his creative, technological ideas. Jack moved to Oakland, California in 2000 and started a company offering his dispatch software through the Internet. Shortly after starting his company, Dorsey came up with the idea for a site that would combine the broad reach of dispatch software with the ease of instant messaging. Dorsey took this idea and pitched it to a company called Odeo.
"He came to us with this idea: 'What if you could share your status with all your friends really easily, so they know what you're doing?'" - Biz Stone (on the creation of Twitter, Biography.com, 2013)
Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone and Evan Williams (an Odeo co-founder) started this new company and they called it Obvious. Within two weeks, Dorsey had built a simple site where users could instantly post short messages of 140 characters or less. They eventually changed the name of the site to Twitter and launched it in 2006.
After a while Dorsey moved on from one, billion dollar idea to another. He moved his focus onto a project he set as his own. With the growing age of technology he wanted to create a way for people to make payments easier and use their credit cards wherever they go. In 2010 he created Square. Square is a small electronic device you can plug into your phone or tablet and it reads credit and debit cards. This has been a big part of more than a million companies in the U.S. alone...
